PROGRAMME OF VISITS 2019

Saturday 9th March 2019 @ 2pm Morant Lecture. This year’s Lecture is hosted by Halstead and District Local History Society at Queens Hall, Chipping Hill, Halstead CO9 2BY. There will be a talk by John Miners about Textiles of East Anglia, followed by a look round H&DLHS museum. Includes refreshments.

Wednesday 24th April 2019 @ 10.30. East Anglian Railway Museum.
A guided tour of the Museum. East Anglian Railway Museum is a real steam engine museum with operating locomotives, a heritage centre and Victorian station buildings.

Saturday 18th May 2019 @ 2pm. Burnham Museum.
A tour of the museum followed by a talk entitled ‘Local history and fossils at Creeksea’ by Margaret Smith. There is an upper and lower gallery to visit. Burnham Museum, Coronation Road, Burnham-onCrouch CM0 8AH.

Saturday 8th June 2019 @ 2pm. AGM: Venue: Little Mapelstead Church, Little Maplestead, Gestingthorpe. CO9 2SL
The AGM will be followed by the chance to explore this fascinating church. St John the Baptist Church built approx. 1335, only 1 of 5 round churches in use in this country today. Refreshments included.

Saturday 20th July 2019 @ 10.30. Marks Hall Estate.
Tour of Marks Hall Estate, Coggeshall Road, Colchester CO6 1TG. Min of 10 people. Café on site for refreshments. Marks Hall Estate has the Arboretum, woodland walks, two lakes and a walled garden.

Wednesday 21st August 2019 @ 10.30. Colliers Brick and Tile Works.
Tour of Colliers Brick and Tile Works, Church Lane, Marks Tey CO6 1LN. Handmade bricks have been made on this site since 1863, and they continue to make bricks by hand using traditional methods.

Saturday 14th September 2019 @ 10.00. Pilots Tour of Stow Maries Airfield.
10am – Arrive at the Mess. Quick comfort break.
1015 – A brief introduction to the site by our team, followed by the showing of two short films.
1030 – A guided tour of the site, including the history of the Aerodrome, the aircraft in their hangars, its wildlife and exciting ongoing work of its restoration.
1145 – Traditional Cream Tea served in the Mess Hall. Homemade scones, cream and locally produced Wilkin & Sons Tiptree Jam with a Pot of Tea.
1215 – Free time to wander the site and shop before your leave – picking up those last minute bargains.
1330 – We all meet at the Mess to say cheerio.

Saturday 2nd November 2019 10.00 – 16.30. History and Archaeology Symposium at Christchurch URC Chelmsford.
There will be a full day of talks on various archaeology and history subjects, plus various stands refreshments and a buffet lunch.

Saturday 9th November 2019@ 2pm. EIAG Annual Meeting Chelmsford Museum. After the Annual meeting, there will be a talk by Jim Lewis on Lea Valley.


Further details of all events and availability are available from our Honorary Secretary, Howard Brooks. All events to be booked via the Excursion Secretary at least 10 days prior to the event. Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope for each event, for maps and other instructions if you do not want these by email. Cheques should be made payable to the Essex Society for Archaeology and History. If there are any transport issues in attending these events, please contact the Secretary.
