A guide to ... Newsletters

Since 1973 the Essex Society for Archaeology and History has published a Newsletter containing articles of historical and archaeological interest at least three times a year. Today our quarterly Newsletter of 24 pages doubles the output of just a few years ago such is the enthusiasm of our members to contribute – as well as the capacity of our Hon. Newsletter Editor.

The Newsletters began in 1960 but it is only since 1973 (with No. 41) that articles of lasting interest have been included. These publications are hard to find in hard copy form and our Society does not have a stock of past publications for sale, so online publication opens up this wealth of resources.

In the earlier years the Newsletter was closely associated with staff working in the Essex County Council Archaeological Unit. It reported very much on the many excavations across the county. Since 2000 the emphasis has shifted more towards local history content of a wide range of subjects. In very recent times it has covered the archives held by the Society, many of which will be transferred on permanent loan, to join the very many other documents deposited, at the Essex Record Office.

The website makes available for the first time a run of Newsletters from 1973 to 2010, complete with an index covering all articles published in Newsletters 41 to 180 between 1973 and 2016.
